“I know,” Sarah said. “I love you too.” She bent over his lap. His legs were thin and wiry, like a bird’s. Breakable. She found it comforting.

The circle around her shifted in their seats, agitated and uncomfortable, as her screams rose in pitch from rage and protest to a panicked shriek.

And the blows kept coming, hard and fast and inescapable. She kept thinking it was going to stop, it had to stop, there was no way she could stand it if it kept coming, and it kept coming. It didn’t matter if she could stand it or not.
